Keep film grain intact when uploading to Vimeo and Youtube

If Vimeo and Youtube destroy your film grain textures don’t sweat it, it’s possible for your videos to retain their film grain structure.

Resolution is important

The most important thing when uploading your videos to Vimeo and Youtube is to upload them in 2K and up, 4K better.

For 2K use a vertical size of 1440 (example: 2560x1440 for 16:9 aspect ratio) and for 4K use a vertical size of 2160 (example: 3840x2160 for 16:9 aspect ratio).

If you only have a 1080P source, up-rez it to 2K before uploading it, this way Youtube and Vimeo will allocate a higher bitrate when doing their re-compression. Trust us it makes a huge difference.

Video format / codec

We recommend uploading ProRes 422HQ files to video sharing websites, they seem to retain their integrity better than other codecs/compression ratios. Also, we prefer Vimeo over Youtube. Vimeo’s re-compression is way better, but if you have to go with YouTube, up-rez your 1080P footage or upload in native 2K/4K.
